Luis Angel Castro

Luis Angel Castro is one of the most renowned singers and authors currently in Costa Rica. He was born in San José, Costa Rica in 1958. He completed his high school studies in the Liceo Franco Costa Rican and then he obtains a Bachelor Degree in Philosophy, in the School of Philosophy of the University of Costa Rica. Since very young he studies music, in particular accordion and at age 18 he begins his career as guitarist and singer. He studies singing with the Chilean teacher Zoila Romero and begins as song writer and composer at age 21. Winner of several recognition awards in Costa Rica for his abundant musical production, he has represented his country in different musical festivals in Mexico, United States, Cuba, Central America and Spain. In December 1998 he starts his own record label called Walaba Productions.
In July 2006 he records his most recent album, a production titled 'Canción y Caribe (Song and Caribbean)'. The song 'Así Me Siento (That’s how I feel)', from this production, wins for Luis Angel the participation, representing Costa Rica, in the next Festival de la Canción de Viña del Mar’ in Chile, in February 2007.

CHRONICLE

  • In 2005 he releases to the market his first DVD 'Songs and Images of the Caribbean’.
  • In 2001 he is sponsored by the Costa Rican Institute of Tourism to perform in the Brazilian Television Network, GLOBE, in Rio de Janeiro.
  • In September 1999 he composes and interprets the Musical Theme of the National Games 'Pococí 1999'.
  • In 1998 he is commissioned to create the official musical theme of the 'International Art Festival’ in
  • Costa Rica, one of the most outstanding art encounters of the Central American region.
  • In 1997 it participates in the Concert 'you Give him it Forces to Limon', Limon, Costa Rica.
  • In 1997 he presents his show ANTHOLOGY, a journey thru his musical career in the National Theater.
  • In 1997 he is invited to play at the charity Concert for the victims of Oaxaca, Mexico. He attended accompanied by the violinist Khrisztopher Tadel, the well-known pianist Manuel Obregón and the percussionist Álvaro López.
  • Luis Angel Castro joined the Polish violinist Khrisztopher Tadel in 1988 and created a successful collaboration.
  • In 1979 in a tour in Guatemala he performs in concerts in the University of San Carlos, Guatemala.

AWARDS

  • December 2002 he receives the award 'Artist of most International Projection' granted by ACAM for his song PUERTO VIEJO recorded in Spain by the renowned artist Ana Belen.
  • December 2001 he receives the award 'Best Composer of the Year in the Infantile Category' granted by ACAM for the production of his compact disk 'COCORÍ, KOTUMA AND THE YAQUÍ'.
  • October 1999 Third Place in national classification for the OTI contest, with his composition ‘ASÍ ME SIENTO’.
  • April 1999 Nomination for the ACAM award in two categories: ‘Best Composer’ and ‘Musical Author of the year’.
  • 1983 Second Place in the First 'Festival of the University Song' with the theme COCORÍ.

RECORDINGS

  • 2006 ' CANCIÓN Y CARIBE (Song and Caribbean)' from which the theme 'Así me siento (That’s how I feel)’ won to represent Costa Rica in the '‘Festival de la Canción (Song Festival) de Viña del Mar’, Chile, February 2007.

FESTIVALS

  • In May of 2005 he represents Costa Rica in the Festival 'Memphis in May' in Memphis, USA.
  • In September 2001 he performs in the outstanding ‘Festival of Music of the city of VIC’, Catalonia, Spain and also carries out presentations in Madrid.
  • In August 2001 he travels to Bogotá to perform in the ‘Festival of the Children’ Song’ Bogotá, 2001.
  • In February of 2000 he performs again in the ‘Music Festival of the South Caribbean' in Puerto Viejo of Limon, Costa Rica, with other national musicians and groups. In that same year he participates in the 'Monte Verde Music Fest’, songs for the ecology, with other national and foreign artists.
  • In May of 1999 it is invited to perform in the ‘Music Festival of the South Caribbean', in Puerto Viejo of Limon. In March of that same year he participates in the 'National Arts Festival, Puntarenas '99’.
  • In 1997 the artist, performs in the 'National Arts Festival, Cartago '97' and in November, he travels to Quintana Roo, Mexico, where he participates in the famous 'Festival of the Caribbean Cultures’. Also in Mexico, the same year he performs in the ‘International Afro-Caribbean Festival', in Veracruz and in the ‘Environmental Cultural Festival Fertile Mother, Our Earth', in the Theater Melico Salazar in Costa Rica.
  • In 1992 he performs for the second time, in the 'Festival of Spring' of the Theater of Fine arts in Guatemala.
  • In 1991 he is invited to the 'Festival of Spring', of the Theater of Fine arts in Guatemala. In 1990, in April, he performs in the Festival 'Airs of April' in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
  • In 1989 he has the extraordinary opportunity to participate in the 'World Festival of the Youth and the Students' in Korea and then in Costa Rica, he is selected to perform in the opening of the concert in Costa Rica of the famous Cuban Singer and Composer 'Silvio Rodríguez' in the National Gymnasium. Also in that year he performs in the World’s Theater Festival 'San José for the Peace'. Costa Rica.
